For expats relocating from areas with very high crime rates—such as South Africa—the shift to Paraguay brings a massive sigh of relief. Paraguay is a conservative, peaceful society where violent crimes like carjackings or home invasions are exceptionally rare. However, it is not a "paradise without rules," and newcomers should always exercise normal situational awareness.

• Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: While you can enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, petty theft and crime of opportunity do exist. Always keep an eye on your belongings, lock your vehicle, and do not openly display excessive wealth.
• Evenings and Nightlife: After attending a social event, a party, or visiting a restaurant at night, we highly recommend taking a registered taxi or using a ride-hailing app rather than walking home in the dark.
• The Real Danger—Traffic and Infrastructure: Statistically, the greatest hazard in Paraguay is the chaotic road traffic and the poor condition of infrastructure. Potholes are frequent, open drainage ditches next to roads are common, and pedestrian sidewalks are often uneven or badly maintained. Defensive driving and looking where you step are vital. Be aware of speed bumps and drainage channels on the roads. Quite often there are no warning signs.

🔘 The "Botón Lince"—Police Assistance via Smartphone

The Paraguayan government (MITIC) has launched an advanced emergency feature within the official national application, the Portal Paraguay. 

By setting up your digital identity (Identidad Electrónica), you gain access to the Botón Lince (Lince Button). In any security emergency, a single tap on this button sends a secure, geolocalized distress signal directly to the elite motorcycle police unit (Grupo Lince) operating closest to you. The nearest patrol will track your exact live GPS location to provide immediate on-the-ground support. 

The Portal Paraguay gives citizens and residents of Paraguay digital access to various government services after registration. To register, one needs the cedula (ID card). The Botón Lince is just one feature, which can be very helpful in an emergency. Currently, the service is only available in Asunción and the province Central. In other parts of the country the call will be directed to the nearest emergency callcenter.
